Just a girl obsessed with books and movies sharing her thoughts.

I’m such a sucker for anything mythology and these past years, I’ve been looking for new books that have that concept. Here’s some of my favourites  in this list !

IF YOU LIKE GREEK MYTHOLOGY

CIRCE BY MADELINE MILLER

I love this book with all my hearts, it has been featured in a lot of my lists but I will repeat it again : it’s a must read haha. If you like greek mythology with an excellent storytelling and empowering yet vulnerable and raw main protagonist. You go for this one.

IF YOU LIKE NORSE MYTHOLOGY

30809689. sy475

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

is one of the funniest retellings of the Norse Mythology that I have read so far. It’s quite short, sweet and weird as Norse Mythology tends to be pretty.. exaggerated haha.

IF YOU LIKE ARABIAN MYTHOLOGY

32718027City of Brass is one my favourite read this week and I cannot wait to write a full review on this book. But to not spoil the review too much, this book feels like reading with the beautiful prose of Strange The Dreamerand the magical feeling of Mistborn and Vicious.

IF YOU LIKE RUSSIAN MYTHOLOGY

The Bear and The Nightingale by Katherine Arden is just so beautiful to read on a cold night with a hot chocolate in my hands. I learned so much about Russian fairytales and the enchanting world of their folklores. Honestly, no words can really describe the feeling of this book and do it justice. You might as well see it for yourself.

IF YOU LIKE LATIN AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY

GODS OF JADE AND SHADOW

The Mayan god of death sends a young woman on a harrowing, life-changing journey in this one-of-a-kind fairy tale inspired by Mexican folklore.

IF YOU LIKE ASIAN SOUTHERN EASTERN  MYTHOLOGY

36301029

Sixteen bestselling and acclaimed authors reimagine the folklore and mythology of East and South Asia in short stories that are by turns enchanting, heartbreaking, romantic, and passionate.

Star-crossed lovers, meddling immortals, feigned identities, battles of wits, and dire warnings: these are the stuff of fairy tale, myth, and folklore that have drawn us in for centuries.

IF YOU LIKE AFRICAN MYTHOLOGY

34728667Children of Blood and Bone is BY far one of my faves of all the books on this list. Such a unique setting and cast, the magical system is so vibrant and colorful. I devoured this book in 2 days and did not regret it. But underneath all the fantasy aspect, the real theme is racism and oppression. It’s raw, it’s brilliant but it can be pretty violent too. The inspiration of the author was West African Mythology and Yoruba culture and language.

Also, I need more recommendations!! Let me know in the comments your favourite mythology retellings 😀

Best,

Trang

I have all of these but the last, and that sounds like one I should add to my collection. So far, though, I’ve only read Circe, but I completely agree with you, it was an absolutely fantastic book. And becasue I enjoyed that I look forward to Madeline Miller’s earlier book, The Song of Achilles, also based on mythology. Another you might enjoy is Jordanna Brodsky’s The Wolf in the Whale which mixes Inuit and viking/Norse mythology, very interesting.

omg, thank you for this post! I am a die hard fan for mythology books! I was about to recommend Gods of Jade and Shadow but then I saw it listed! It’s one of my favorites from this year! Have you read the Tiger Curse by Colleen Houck? It’s not the best book in the whole world but it’s still one of my favorites. It’s about Indian Mythology. ❤

Have you read Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller? I feel like it gets so much more hype than Circe, but I actually loved Circe a LOT more! She was a really flawed and…human protagonist, which I find is actually pretty hard to achieve with mythology retellings. I’ve been thinking about giving Norse Mythology a try, can’t wait to read it! 😀
