The Umbrella Academy Vol. 2 /Vol. 3 : Dallas – Hotel Oblivion

The Umbrella Academy was one of my highlights of the year, as you can tell in my early review for the Volume 1 . I absolutely loved the show, all the cast were amazing. For those of you who just finished the series, you probably wonder what’s going to happen next? Will the show follow the sequels? I have no idea, but one thing for sure, I am hooked to this series.

VOL 2 : DALLAS

4/5

Like the first volume, the second one has a solid storyline and I absolutely loved the writing in this one. The humour is still present and it’s packed with action scenes over the top. The progression and tension built in this volume are done with a precision that allows the story to unveil.

What I particularly find fascinating is the ability of the author to switch between comedic scenes to serious conversations and themes. We witness the Rumour’s hatred conflict towards Vanya (I mean, I can understand that) but we also witness its two characters’ s development. Vanya has no idea or no memory what she did previously and so woke up totally confused while all the rest still remembers the mess she’s done. I was happy to see that they kept the art as messy and simple as the first volume. I think it’s the most adequate style for this humorous yet violent story.

VOL 3 : HOTEL OBLIVION

Release Date: September 17, 2019

2/5

As I loved the first two volumes, I couldn’t say the same thing for the third. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations.

In every volume and graphic novel, I always ask myself what is the purpose of it? In this one, I found none. The characters were all over the place, it’s messy and it lost the spark it had before. I would always read it and expecting something greater but it just ends in anti-climatic situations. In the end, there’s a huge cliffhanger but again, for what purpose? There are also no character development, which can also be explained by the huge amount of characters that we’ve been seeing in this one so far.

I don’t know if they intend to go on with a 4th volume, but if they do, I hope they will make it a bit more organized and clear with the plot and the storyline next time.

I enjoyed the show too but it seems that the comic book has its ups and downs. I bought the first volume so I’ll be reading it eventually. I got it to see where the show might head.

Thank god I don’t need to rewd this final instalment 😂 Isn’t it weird that you reviewed this graphic novel and your co-blogger reviewed the same book as well not long after 🤔 And both are are advanced copies review. I wonder what’s the advantage for having the same copies reviewing on the same platform 🤔..
