I read a couple of Tamora Pierce’s novels when I was younger but haven’t revisited any of them in recent years. However, I’ve been hearing great things about Tempests and Slaughter which makes me want to pick it up soon. Great post!

That’s so great to hear!! After reading Tempests and Slaughter I wanted to read more books from her 😀 What was your fave? Do you think it would still be relevant reading it as an adult?

I honestly can’t even remember which ones I picked up, it’s been so long haha! But I know Regan from PeruseProject has been reading her books recently and has really been enjoying them so I think they should still be fun even as an adult. 🙂

I loved the dynamic stories of all 4 siblings. I loved Chloe’s writing. The contrast of how you live your life knowing the day you will die was intriguing to me. I believe they lived it differently although all of them tried to deny it. It drove them all crazy in their own way with the date in the backs of their minds. What about you?

My favorite is the Beka Cooper trilogy, which starts with Terrier! The premise sounds weird, but I promise it’s so good and the series just keeps getting better!

I seem to be the only person who wasn’t completely in love with To Kill a Kingdom (what am I missing when it comes to that book?!) but I’m really glad you enjoyed it Trang. Also seeing Tempests and Slaughter on your list has made me want to pick it up ASAP (I have it on my TBR list but it’s low down at the moment).

I always recommend people to start with the first series, Song of the Lioness. The first book as the worst title ever Alanna: The First Adventure, but don’t let that stop you! This book contains essential world building for all the books set in Tortall. Plus it’s got some wonderful feminist ideas for fantasy! Remember, this book was written in 1983.

That said, you could really start anywhere. Pierce does a great job explaining relevant details about the cities and characters who cross between books so you don’t feel left out.

I recently read The Immortalists too! It’s such a good book. I loved the irony of Varya being obsessed with making people live longer when she was the only one of her siblings who was actually going to get old.

I increasingly think I need to read The Kill a Kingdom. I was already interested but the Bardugo comparison has sealed the deal!

YAS The Immortalists play a lot with the irony of life and death and that one with Varya is a strong aspect of the book too 😀 To Kill A kingdom was a nice surprise to me 🙂
