“Naughty John, Naughty John, does his work with his apron on. Cuts your throat and takes your bones, sells ’em off for a coupla stones.”
― Libba Bray, The Diviners
Do you have a book that you’ve been postponing its reviews because you feel like you just CAN’T DO IT JUSTICE? Yupp that’s me for everybook. LOL jk mostly this one. I’ve read this a while ago and never had the strength to put out its review. Today’s the day ! No more procrastinating ! I’ll try my best to describe my experience but YOU SHOULD ALL READ IT 😀
Why this book was 5 stars
- 1920s setting. Something about that period really excites me! I think it’s the dress-code in that time mixing with The Great Gatsby vibe. But also a very important period of prohibition, from the liquors to organized crimes. People are enjoying life but also start to discover the little forbidden pleasures of life.

- The magical surrealism. Early in the novel, we get to see a glimpse of the supernatural and some Diviners’ powers. But as you read the book, you discover that it’s not a simple magic system. Some people got their powers reveal in dreams, others in some weird odd situations or simply genetic.

- The murders and thrillers vibe. When I first heard about this series, I honestly didn’t know it was going to be THIS DARK? Oh hell, I didn’t even know there was going to be a mystery murder kind of storyline. The murders are pretty raw and bloody from time to time.

- The characters are entertaining and endearing. I really liked Evie as the main character. She’s reckless, witty smart but can also be very stubborn. I can see myself in her hahah. Will, her uncle, owns a very odd museum about supernatural stuff. He’s passionate about history, but can also be protective, patient and very analytic. We meet along the journey, Sam, a professional young thief who is hired by her Uncle to help with the museum and Jericho, a fellow student of Will, who tried to hide a dark secret from his past.
Have you read this book? Do you intend to read it ?
I immediately jumped to the sequel after finishing this one. It’s so worth it, even better than the first one! 😀
