In this novel, Starr witnesses the death of her friend, who got shot by the police. The story follows her journey to be the only witness of the tragic event while the police officer is trying to win the case by justifying his actions. Angie Thomas does not shy away. I’m serious guys. I have never read a book this honest and raw. It’s emotional, rich character development and a stunning debut novel. This book was probably the MOST successful book of the year! After its release, it won several award and also the movie is on its way!
Half the size of The Hate U Give but AS AMAZING. This book is written from Justyce’s perspective, a brilliant boy who got caught in an escalating series of racism and violence. Dear Martin is one of his secret projects where he wrote letters to Martin Luther King. To better himself and thinking what would Dr Martin do in this race conflicts? How should he react? This is a quick book who will make you feel uncomfortable but also open your eyes to the reality of racism in America.
For these books, I’m not going to write every single reason why they are 5 stars. Because I wouldn’t do these books justice. Instead, I want to take some time to talk about the message in both books: the racism. Especially, racism against African Americans. Reading these novels make me realize how much I don’t know ANYTHING about racism. It made me feel uneasy and troubled, I was reading the pages and I was anxious for the characters, I felt the injustice, the frustration of being treated less because of the colour of your skin.
That’s why I want EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU to read one of these books (both is even better).
Yes, it will make you feel uncomfortable but you will understand why these problems need to change. We need to change the conversation. It’s not normal that we leave our world to scared children who won’t have the same rights and reassurance as other children just because they’re black. To the children who have to be taught how to behave when the police arrests them.THIS IS NOT RIGHT. Police should protect the lives of the innocent and not the opposite. This is not the life I want for ANYBODY. I’m extremely impressed by the bravery and the patience some people deal with it every single day.
