MY RATING:★★★.5 /5

He has no voice, or name, only a rank, Eighth. He doesn’t know the details of the mission, only the directives that hum in his mind.
Dart the humans. Leave them where they fall.
His job is to protect his Offside. Let her do the shooting.
Until a human kills her…
Sixteen year-old Raven is at summer camp when the terrifying armored Nahx invade, annihilating entire cities, taking control of the Earth. Isolated in the wilderness, Raven and her friends have only a fragment of instruction from the human resistance.
Shelter in place.

Alright, guys this is one of the hardest reviews I’ve had to write. Because the only aspect that makes this book bad, is also one of those that makes this book awesome. See how confused I am? LOL And that is, the pace.

abtwp3k

It’s slow. I mean very slow. I’m not a big fan of slow building plot and even less when it has the same vibe as The 5th Wave. However, this slow pace is also a nice add since it allows us to really contemplate the collapse and deterioration of the world. This same pace also enables the reader to really connect with the characters and for the first time, it takes half the book before the main characters meet each other.

However, I couldn’t connect with Raven for some reason. She’s portrayed as very kick-ass bad-ass female of colour but something in the prose didn’t click with me. Every time she started talking I just didn’t feel anything.

Eighth on the other hand, was portrayed perfectly. His tragic and pathetic way turned into bravery and struggles make him even more real (I basically want to hug him every time something happens).

I’m giving a 3.5 for the originality of the communication aspect that is always forgotten in YA sci-fi novels. They have to struggle to talk to each other, and trying to understand since they are not from the same planet. The ending was a cliffhanger and definitely makes us want to read the second book!

Overall, the novel is a lot darker and more realistic than The 5th Wave, I really loved the POV of Eighth (I would definitely read the sequels if it was only him haha)  but the slow pace and my conflictual feelings towards the characters made it lose 1,5 star.

Hi Trang! I couldn’t relate to Raven either… but I totally loved Eighth! His entire journey wandering around, trying to resist “the voices” and his saving Raven… wow! And the way they communicated was the neatest part of the book! ♥️

Nice Review, Trang! I’ve been hearing same issues from the other readers too! I’m not fan of slow paced plots but I still want to give this one a shot. 🙂

Great review for this book Trang, especially considering it sounds like it was a really hard review to write. I don’t mind books with a slow plot when there is something else to hook me, like the characters or the world building. It’s great there was something that hooked you on Zero, Repeat Forever but a shame you couldn’t connect with Raven’s character.
    Again great review Trang! 😀

Shame this didn’t blow you away- but I totally get why! When a book is slow it can be nice to get really immersed in the world- but it can also be a drag! And I’ve had characters I just didn’t connect to before and that always means I don’t enjoy the book as much- which is a pity! great review though!

Oh my goodness! I admit that I found the blurb a tad confusing or somewhat vague. Is it just me or is that the case? I am curious about this, but I also lack patience for slow plots and revelation. But when done right (i.e. more atmospheric reads) I can appreciate it. But failure to connect with the mc is a huge downfall for me. I can see why you struggled with reviewing this, but the review itself it fantastic!
