MY RATING:★★★.5 /5
He has no voice, or name, only a rank, Eighth. He doesn’t know the details of the mission, only the directives that hum in his mind.
Dart the humans. Leave them where they fall.
His job is to protect his Offside. Let her do the shooting.
Until a human kills her…

Alright, guys this is one of the hardest reviews I’ve had to write. Because the only aspect that makes this book bad, is also one of those that makes this book awesome. See how confused I am? LOL And that is, the pace.

It’s slow. I mean very slow. I’m not a big fan of slow building plot and even less when it has the same vibe as The 5th Wave. However, this slow pace is also a nice add since it allows us to really contemplate the collapse and deterioration of the world. This same pace also enables the reader to really connect with the characters and for the first time, it takes half the book before the main characters meet each other.

However, I couldn’t connect with Raven for some reason. She’s portrayed as very kick-ass bad-ass female of colour but something in the prose didn’t click with me. Every time she started talking I just didn’t feel anything.
Eighth on the other hand, was portrayed perfectly. His tragic and pathetic way turned into bravery and struggles make him even more real (I basically want to hug him every time something happens).

I’m giving a 3.5 for the originality of the communication aspect that is always forgotten in YA sci-fi novels. They have to struggle to talk to each other, and trying to understand since they are not from the same planet. The ending was a cliffhanger and definitely makes us want to read the second book!
Overall, the novel is a lot darker and more realistic than The 5th Wave, I really loved the POV of Eighth (I would definitely read the sequels if it was only him haha) but the slow pace and my conflictual feelings towards the characters made it lose 1,5 star.
