It’s really rare that I don’t finish a book. I always force myself to finish a book to, at least, say with certitude that I didn’t like it. I read 241 pages of this novel and I had to stop. I couldn’t endure it. But then, my best friend was like okay aren’t you intrigued by the ending at least? So I went straight to the ending and read it. And damn, I LIKED THAT LAST PAGE.
But for me to endure 400 pages to get 2 pages in the end worth it? I DON’T KNOW. So y’all, here’s why I couldn’t finish it but I still rate it 2 stars for the ending.
I don’t know what happens to Marissa Meyer after The Lunar Chronicles, but oh gawd, everything felt so cheesy and odd.
Heartless is set to be the prequel to Alice In Wonderland, yes another fairytale retelling. And no it’s not that good unfortunately. I was expecting a darker and more sinister from one of the most popular villains of all times. Instead, we have Catherine a marquess daughter who’s passionate about baking. The King has a crush on her but OH STRUGGLE she doesn’t like him back and OH she doesn’t want to be queen… Meanwhile, there’s a Jabberwocky terrorizing Wonderland.
I couldn’t get myself to like Catherine, like at all. From the beginning she keeps annoying me with her love for bakery and all her oh caramel salé here and there. If you had to pick all the French stereotypes and throw it in a character, this would be her. I’ve never seen the word macarons so many times in a book… For a person who loves sweets, this overuse of macarons really got on my nerves. OKAY WE GET IT. SHE LIKES TO BAKE. FANCY PASTRIES. PLEASE MOVE ON.
One of the most predictable instalove ever. She ha it all way too easy since the beginning. Enters the ballroom with the only girl in dress boum, she’s getting proposed by the King but oh no she had to run away and BAM she meets the love of her life, Jest, a Joke, who’s not in nobility enough. OH MISERE. Can you imagine me rolling my eyes? I couldn’t care less about her romance either. Jest, the Joker, is nothing but a joke. Frankly, he has the least character development of all.
After 240 pages, I see that the plot is not getting better, the characters were still annoying that I would just waste my time. Then, I read the ending. A really nice ending. It’s like she puts all her efforts just to get the ending right and it did so I’m giving stars for that.
